IMG_3446This past week-end saw South Africa’s top Stand Up Paddlers fighting for the Western Province title. It was also the 3rd and final qualifying contest for the SA team.

This year was the biggest turn out yet, with over 80 entrants. The contest was to be held at one of 3 beaches, Tableview, Milnerton or Muizenberg depending on conditions. Tableview was the call on Saturday with glassy 3-4ft waves, perfect weather, not a breath of wind and warm water J The juniors kicked off the contest with the first couple of heats followed by the open men which was incredible to watch. Then it was the open ladies. All these girls are so good, which made all our heats extremely close and very competitive. I was lucky enough to get the two waves I needed to advance through to Semi-finals.

Sunday was FINALS day! We made a call and decided to keep it at Tableview again, however with the hightide the sea went to sleep and there were teeny tiny waves, not very contestable at all. We stalled the start and waited for tide to start dropping and before we knew it we had 2-3ft pristine waves that were so rippable!

Eventually, after lunch the open ladies went in for our semi-final and I was lucky enough to advance through to the final. I would have hated to be a judge during this heat as it was SO close, all the ladies had good waves and shredded. In the end I was crowned the Ladies champ.

Well done to all of the competitors. EPIC WEEK-END !

See ya next year!
