Durban Summer Series – Wave Event 3

After a scorcher Thursday night King Fisher time trial with another record turnout it was decided over a couple much deserved cold beers and weather apps being analyzed that Saturday would be the best day to run the final wave event of the Durban Summer Series.

The waves in front of Afro Chickens have been cooking lately and Saturday was no different. The swell was slightly smaller than expected but there were still some fun SUP waves to be had.

The sun is up by 4:30AM now so there were a couple eager beavers that got a dawnie session in and some pre heat practice on some fun 1 to 2 foot little right- handers.

The water was warm and the wind was light, making for perfect SUP conditions. The wind was scheduled to pick up, so the contest was underway by 7am. The earlier heats saw some great waves with some really great surfing all round. Some of the sections were a bit flat and the best scores were coming from the guys and girls who managed to connect their waves all the way to the inside!

In the open men’s final it was the usual suspects Brandon Ribbink and Justin Bing who have been jossling for top position in the series along with Steve Lawson and Jon Ivins who have been improving after each event and managed to edge ahead of SA Legends Champ Grantley Read in the semi finals. Grantley was surfing really well on his Coreban Platinum up until the semis where the waves unfortunately didn’t come his way. In the end it was Justin who managed to secure 2 waves to the beach and narrowly bump Brandon into 2nd to take out the series win!

In the Ladies division it was Jackie De Billot who took out the win and the overall series title. Jackie has come along way since the start of the series, improving each event and is off to Cape Town next month to test her skills at the biggest SUPing event in South Africa, the Coreban Summer Series! In 2nd spot and new to competitive SUPing was Trish Sanderman who racked up a number of waves but lacked 2 high scoring waves. In 3rd was young Daniella Arigo who also got some great waves.

In the juniors it was once again Kyle and Ricardo who battled it out for the top spot with Kyle squeaking ahead to take out the win. These kids are on the up and will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the future!

That wraps up the first ever Durban SUP Summer Series 2014 and what a great one it was. Well done to everyone who participated in the racing and wave riding disciplines. It’s always great to see the new faces getting into and enjoying this amazing sport!

The prize giving and end of year party will be taking place at Hops and Barley at the riverside hotel on the 6th of December with loads of prizes to be won and beer to be drunk, see you there!
