27 Stoked paddlers gathered at FHBSLC this past Saturday for the final race of the Miller’s Downwind Series. The conditions could not have been more perfect, an absolutely stunning Cape Town Day with a nice 20 knot blow from the point, the gang was eager to get to Miller’s and get on the water, so we piled in the rider’s and set off.
The drive to the Point offers great views of the run and from the look of it, our hopes were high. Upon arrival at Millers there is always a little panic, as you scramble to get your your gear together and kit up.
First off as usual, it was the Shark Bait group. Young gun and winner of the From Class, Brad Ewing was hot off the line and looking in fine form. However, Nicholas Winfeild and Chris Dillon, were hot on his heals and would not make it easy for him. The two ladies in the group, Monica and Jan, proved their competence and gave the guys a solid run for their money and ended up third and fourth in their division overall.
Following the Shark Bait, by 10 minutes it was the Shark Spotters. Mike De Villiers took the lead early and held it right to the end, leaving Mike D, Sean White, Justin Linley and Peter Lambert fight it out for the remaining podium positions.
Still at the point and last to leave, the Warriors had 5 minutes to wait after the Spotters and were itching to go. The whistle blew and the 11 guys and 1 girl were off in a flash. Tom King, Sean Avni, Gary Van Rooyen and Ollie got a head of the pack with ease and would fight it out for the top three positions. In the end and looking unstoppable, it was Tom King who came in first – 6 minutes ahead of the next competitor, Gary Van Rooyen who managed to edge out Ollie in the dying seconds and steal the overall second position right out from under Sean Avni’s nose.
It was awesome to have so many new faces take part and great to see more and more ladies joining in and giving the guys a run for their money. We will be kicking off with the first Downwind Series of 2016 mid Jan and look forward to seeing you all there. Until then have a fantastic festive season and we will see you on the water for some social runs.
