The Mistral Summer Sup Weekend which incorporated The South African Downwind Championships got just what the Cape Doctor ordered.
While the 30 knot south-easter was not ideal for spectators, the competitors relished the downwind conditions. All of the best downwind racers showed up to compete in the final SUPSA sanctioned event of the year. Aside from the technical and downwind racing, a new fun Extreme Waterman race took place as a tester for a big 2018 event that is planned. In the strong wind conditions, it was record holder Tom King on his Mistral Equinox who took the win in both down wind races from National team member, Dylan Frick.
Dylan did have revenge in the technical race where he edged out his rival Tom. Not to be outdone, a stream-lined Tarryn King, after having a baby 8 weeks ago, showed that she is still the force to be reckoned with, winning the tech race and both down winds. Monika Wohlgemuth from Greece won the Diva’s and Gary van Rooyen the Legends division.
