This past weekend we saw some of South Africa’s best surfers and stand up paddleboarders hit the warm water in Durban for the Zigzag City surf series event.
For the past couple of years this event has been for young men and women who are accumulating points to try and get onto the Championship Tour! However, this year much to our surprise, City Surf Series has decided to involve 5 of the top female longboarders and 8 of the top male surfers in the country. The 5 invited ladies, Tarryn King (Cape Town), Raylin Wynne (Cape Town), Angelica Schon (Cape Town), Christy Gilmour (Cape Town) and Faye Zoetmulder (Seal Point) headed out for one final in 2-3ft onshore surf. The heat started off with all 5 surfers getting waves of a similar score making it a very exciting heat for spectators! In the end it was Durban’s very own Christy Gilmour who took the win! Well done Christy!
We also had the first ever SUP race leg of the series. This was a 5km technical race in & out through the surf. This style of SUP racing is one of the most exciting ways to race for competitors and spectators alike! The men’s field headed out first with Dylan Frick (Cape Town), Thomas King (Cape Town) , Chris Couve (Johannesburg) and Matt Swemmer (Durban) leading the pack to the first buoy. Once rounding the outside buoy and heading back towards the beach through the surf, placing changed as boards went flying and paddles got lost. Dylan & Thomas managed to conquer the waves and hang onto their positions with a solid lead! The fight for third and fourth was on between Matt Swemmer, Shayne Chipps & Thulani . In the end it was Dylan and Thomas in 1st & 2nd with Matt and Shayne in 3rd and 4th respectively!
The ladies set off with Lande Williamson (Durban) leading the ladies and Tarryn King (Cape Town) – with Klarissa Grace on her tail. Once again positions changed when the ladies came through the surf with Tarryn taking the lead on the second lap. In the end it was Tarryn across the line first with Lande in 2nd and Klarissa Grace 3rd.
It was a well organized event with lots of spectators and plenty of smiles all round! Keep posted for the next event happening in Cape Town in June!
