THE BATTLE OF THE BAY – 2020 powered by AK Airush Kiteboarding
The first wing-foil ocean race to be held on the African continent was held in variable conditions on Saturday 28th November. With favourite for the event, multi-watersportsman, Tom King out of the mix due to family commitments – it was open season for the likes of Matt Maxwell, Dylan Wichman and Armin Wohlgemuth to show their metal. The wind showed up for the start of the race in Simon’s Town, but sadly died off half-way through.
11 guys and one brave woman, Monika Wohlgemuth took to the water in an array of colourful wings. Gary van Rooyen blazed out of the blocks and immediately took a short-lived lead, before upending himself back into 10th position. Armin took over the lead but went too far upwind of the turning buoy and was overtaken by Dylan, Matt and Ian Wolmerans. The lead swopped a number of times before the wind died and the whole field limped home into Muizenberg. Dylan showed that daily practice pays off and took the win in 49 minutes, with Armin and Matt coming in a few minutes later.
There was an unfortunate incident with a young Durban lifesaver losing his life when the jet-ski that he was being towed behind, lost him in the surf out in Muizenberg. They were responding to a call-out to assist some of the wing-foilers that had been becalmed out in the bay, not realizing that there was a rescue boat in attendance following the fleet. We would like to send our sincere condolences to 23 year old Thokozani Mthethwa’s family and friends. RIP Thokozani.
